Exporting Your Expenses to Quicken
Xpenser supports exporting your expenses via the QIF format, which can be imported by Quicken, Microsoft Money, and a host of other applications.
To export your expenses, select the “Export: Quicken (QIF)” option from the Expense tab:

Save the resulting file to disk, and from Quicken use the File->Import->QIF File option to import it.
Note that starting with Quicken 2005 the option for importing data via QIF was removed for most account types. If you are using Quicken 2005 or newer, create a new Cash account: Add Account->”This account is not held at a financial institution”->Cash Flow/Cash. You’ll be able to import your expenses to this account.
If needed, you can move your expenses to your other accounts by selecting the expenses, right-clicking, and selecting “Move Transactions”.

Is there a way to mark which expenses have been exported?
Christian, the common method is to create another report and move the exported reports into it. For example, you could have the reports:
Personal Expenses Current
Personal Expenses August
You can record the expenses into the “Current” report, and once you’re ready to process it (eg. export it), move them into the the “August” report. That way you have your expenses packaged for easy tracking later.
I think it would be a sensible addition to allow this transfer to proceed both ways, i.e., provide an “Import” feature to match the “Export” feature.
This may sound less useful because Xpenser is usually used as the data gathering and aggregating tool, but consider the fact that there is an interface in place from Xpenser to the invoicing capability of Freshbooks.
If expenses are already being tracked by an external application, importing this data into Xpenser would provide a valuable conduit into Freshbooks.

Gary, import capability is requested surprisingly frequently and is on our roadmap to implement. Keep an eye on the blog for the announcement.
Wondering if the export also will export to Quickbooks, which, i believe, uses a different format (IIF) than Quicken. Thanks.
Laura, Quickbooks support is on the roadmap. We’ll connect with you over email (or drop us a line at feedback@xpenser.com) so we can get more details about how you plan to use Xpenser with Quickbooks.
Put me on the list for Quickbooks export info.
I use Quickbooks for all my accounting billing and so do many of my clients.
I’m a huge support of “paperless”, and Xpenser has really helped me and my clients for not needing to write things down. Many of my clients use quickbooks for billing, and if Xpenser could export in IIF format for import in QB, I’d name my first child “Xpenser”…LOL
Hit me up for any questions/development for a QB export.
Great feature – thanks! Is there away to include a Quicken category in the QIF file? As of now, I have to go to each transaction I imported and assign a catagory to it which is an extra time consuming step. Maybe I am being dumb but I could not figure out a way to do this with tags or other options.
Thanks!
Patrick
Yes, I too would like to be able to include a quicken category. I just assumed the xpenser “type” would plug into the Quicken Category. Please respond to my and Patrick’s post soon.
Regards,
Justin
Same question as patrick — I am successfully importing Xpenser into Quicken, but then I need to manually edit each entry to get things into the correct category. Am I missing some way of doing this? Thanks.
Patrick and Justin, sounds like you have a pre-defined set of categories and you’d like the Xpenser export to use those categories? Can you contact us at feedback@xpenser.com so we can discuss details?
I would like to have the TAGS exported as the category. I am currently using tags and they would map nicely to a category…
Ray, the version of Xpenser that’s in use by our business users already supports categories, so once that’s available to non-business you should be set to go. It’s coming soon, and feel free to drop us an email at feedback@xpenser.com if you want access.
We have successfully exported a QIF file into Quicken, but the tags we designated in Xpenser did not come along. Is there a way to make that happen?
Are categories available? When I export a CSV file there is a Categories column, but there doesn’t seem to be anyway to but something in there from the Xpenser web site.
Ralph, categories are only available in the Xpenser For Business version. Drop us a line if you’re interested and we can set you up with a trial account: feedback@xpenser.com .
